Sears : forms committee for sale of Kenmore, home improvement unit

05/14/2018 | 03:57pm CEST

(Reuters) – Struggling department store operator Sears Holdings Corp said on Monday it has formed a special committee to explore the sale of its Kenmore appliances brand, home improvement products and parts direct business.

Shares of the retailer rose as much as 19 percent to $4.08 in morning trading.

Billionaire investor Eddie Lampert had last month asked the company’s board to sell these assets, adding that his hedge fund ESL Investments Inc would bid in any sale.

ESL had bid $500 million for the home improvement and parts direct and said it planned to table a bid for Kenmore and the chain’s real estate assets.

Lampert, who is also the Chief Executive Officer of the company, had said he would excuse himself from any discussions or decisions for any potential transaction involving ESL as a buyer.

Lampert owns 30 percent of the company, while his hedge fund has 19 percent stake, according to Thomson Reuters data.

The company’s board on Monday formed a committee of independent directors to evaluate ESL’s proposal and to seek other offers.

Centerview Partners is Sears’ investment banker and Weil, Gotshal and Manges its legal counsel.

Best Credit Cards for Home Improvement Projects

Best Credit Cards for Home Improvement Projects

Are you planning to upgrade some appliances in your home or thinking of repainting that room that’s been neglected for years? If so, you’re likely trying to decide the best way for you to fund these home improvement projects. While you may be tempted to reach for your debit card or checkbook, there is one option you should consider: a credit card. Even though credit cards are often associated with debt, if they’re used responsibly, they can be a handy financial tool, especially when you have a hefty bill to pay, like for home improvements. Keep reading to discover why a credit card is your best bet to fund home improvement projects. Plus, see which card I used to fund my own recent home improvement project.

Why use a credit card to fund home improvement projects?

Even if you have the cash to cover your home improvement projects — I did and I still used credit — it makes sense to choose credit. Below are some of the perks you can expect with a credit card.

Earn rewards on your purchases

This is probably the most obvious perk of using a credit card to pay for your home improvements, but it’s one that’s often overlooked. That’s because a lot of homeowners get tunnel vision when it comes to financing their home improvement projects, as they aim to save the money to cover the purchase. While that’s a great financial goal, paying in cash or writing a check won’t earn you any rewards. On the flip side, when you use a rewards credit card to fund your project, you’ll earn cash back or points/miles on the purchase, then you can use the cash you saved to pay off the balance. For example, I recently updated all of the appliances in my home, including the microwave, dishwasher, refrigerator, freestanding oven/stove and garbage compactor. Even though I had the cash to cover the purchase, I charged it all to my Citi Double Cash Card (a NextAdvisor advertiser), which earns 1% cash back when I make a purchase and another 1% when I pay for the purchase. After I paid off the $4,037.05 balance with the money I saved, I earned a total of $80.74 cash back, which is $80.74 I wouldn’t have if I paid with a debit card, cash or check.

You can technically use any rewards credit card to fund your home improvement project, but it’s smart to pick one that will maximize your rewards potential, meaning it earns you at least 1.5% back. Here are some cash back and travel cards that do exactly that:

Our top pick for earning rewards on your home improvement projects is the Wells Fargo Cash Wise Visa Card. This card not only earns an unlimited 1.5% cash back on all purchases, but it also offers a generous intro bonus opportunity. When you use the card to spend $1,000 on purchases, including your home improvements, in the first 3 months, you’ll get a $200 cash rewards bonus! What’s more, if you use a mobile wallet, like Apple Pay or Android Pay, to make purchases during the first 12 months, you’ll earn 1.8% cash back on those mobile wallet purchases. When it’s time to redeem your cash rewards, Wells Fargo customers have the most redemption options, as they can redeem via a direct deposit into their Wells Fargo checking or savings account and for a cash withdrawal from a Wells Fargo ATM. All cardholders can redeem their cash rewards for a physical check, gift cards, merchandise and travel. The Wells Fargo Cash Wise Visa Card has no annual fee and offers a 12-month 0% intro APR on purchases and balance transfers (with a 3% intro balance transfer fee for 12 months, then it’s 5%), which means you’ll have some time to pay off your home improvement project before interest kicks in. What’s more, when you use your Wells Fargo Cash Wise Visa Card to pay your monthly cell phone bill, you’ll get up to $600 protection on your phone against covered damage or theft. There’s a $25 deductible per claim and a maximum of 2 claims per year, but the protection offered to cardholders is likely more extensive and cost-effective than any protection you’d get from your cell phone provider.

The Citi Double Cash Card, which was my choice for funding the appliance upgrades, offers a unique way to earn cash back. That’s because cardholders first earn 1% when they make a purchase with the card, then another 1% when they pay for the purchase, bringing the total to an effective 2% cash back on all purchases. Cash back earned with the Citi Double Cash Card can be redeemed for a check, statement credit, direct deposit into your bank account or gift card. The card has no 0% intro APR on purchases, meaning you’ll want to pay off the purchase before the statement closes to avoid interest — that’s exactly what I did — but it does have an 18-month 0% intro APR on balance transfers (with a 3% balance transfer fee, $5 minimum). Additionally, you’ll pay no annual fee and get a free monthly Equifax FICO score. Finally, you’ll get access to a number of Citi cardholder perks, including Quick Lock (a feature that allows you to easily lock or unlock your card using the mobile app or online portal), Price Rewind (this automates the process of making sure you get the best price for purchases you make with the card), travel insurance and car rental insurance.

It should be noted that a cash back credit card with rotating categories may also be a good option for your home improvement project, depending on the card’s categories. We didn’t include any in this post because the top options, Discover it – Cashback Match and Chase Freedom – $150 Bonus, do not currently offer home improvement stores as a 5% cash back category (note that Chase hasn’t announced all of its 2018 categories yet, so there’s a chance it could be one of the 5% categories later this year).

If you’d prefer a card that earns travel rewards, the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card is your best bet. This card earns an unlimited 2X miles on all purchases and has an impressive intro bonus opportunity. Cardholders who spend $3,000 on purchases within the first 3 months from account opening, an achievable amount for most home improvement projects, will earn a 50,000-mile bonus — that’s equal to $500 in travel! The Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card also offers a high-earning mile opportunity. While it doesn’t apply to home improvement purchases, it’s still an awesome perk that’s worth noting. From now through Jan. 31, 2020, you’ll earn 10X miles per $1 spent on hotels when you book through Hotels.com/Venture. Miles earned with the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card can be redeemed for travel with no blackout dates, cash, brand-name merchandise and more — note that redeeming for travel gives you the most value for your miles. While this card does have a $95 annual fee, it’s waived for the first year. It also has no foreign transaction fees, an ideal perk for any world traveler, and a number of Visa Signature benefits, including complimentary concierge service, road assist service, travel and emergency service and more.

Prefer a travel rewards card with no annual fee? If so, Discover it Miles is for you. This card earns an unlimited 1.5 miles on all purchases. Plus, at the end of your first year as a cardholder, Discover will match all of the miles you’ve earned. This means if you’ve earned 50,000 miles in the first year, Discover will match that 50,000 miles to give you a total of 100,000 miles back! Rewards earned with Discover it Miles can be redeemed for direct deposit into your bank account and a statement credit to cover travel purchases (airline tickets, hotels rooms, car rentals, travel agents, online travel sites and commuter transportation) made in the past 180 days. Discover it Miles has a 14-month 0% intro APR on purchases (after that, the standard rate applies), no annual fee, no foreign transaction fees and a handful of cardholder perks, including Discover’s Freeze it (allowing you to freeze and unfreeze your card if it’s ever misplaced or stolen) and free social security number alerts, among others.

Pay down your home improvement purchase interest-free

Even if you don’t have the cash to pay off the full price of your home improvement project, a credit card is a smart payment option for you. That’s because low APR credit cards offer long 0% intro APRs on purchases, which means you’ll have plenty of time to pay down your home improvement project, allowing you to make the update now and pay down the balance over time interest-free. This means you can add some value to your home without having to save up all the cash upfront. Not sure which cards offer the longest 0% intro APRs on purchases? Here are some of our top picks:

The Citi Simplicity Card – No Late Fees Ever offers a lengthy 18-month 0% intro APR on purchases, giving you ample time to pay down your home improvement project. The 18-month 0% intro APR also extends to balance transfers, but note that there’s a 5% balance transfer fee ($5 minimum). In addition to getting monthly updates to your FICO scores, the Citi Simplicity Card – No Late Fees Ever has, as you guessed from the name, no late fees, no penalty APRs and no annual fee. Cardholders also have the ability to choose their own payment due date, allowing them to align their Citi Simplicity Card payment with their paycheck.

Chase Slate is another option for someone who wants to avoid credit card interest for over a year. That’s because cardholders will get a 15-month 0% intro APR on purchases and balance transfers. Plus, those who transfer the balance within the first 60 days of account opening will pay no balance transfer fees (after that, it’s 5% or $5, whichever is greater). If you’re planning to take advantage of card’s 0% intro APR on purchases to fund your home improvement project, the $0 balance transfer fee may not be something you take advantage of, but it’s still a strong perk worth noting. On top of that, cardholders will pay no annual fee and no penalty APR.

Gain financial flexibility

It’s no secret that home improvement projects can get expensive, as sometimes problems pop up that you weren’t expecting. For example, if you’re planning to redo the bathroom, you may start the demolition process only to discover the sink’s pipes are no longer to code and now you need to replace all of them. While you may have budgeted for such an expense, there’s a chance that it may cost more than you budgeted for, especially if it’s a DIY project and you haven’t purchased all of the supplies yet. Opting to buy with a credit card allows you to get a bit more financial flexibility, so when the unexpected pops up, you’re covered.

Get more fraud protection

This is something we’ve explained before, but it’s worth noting again. Credit cards offer the most fraud protection of any form of payment. In addition to laws that provide more fraud liability for credit cards, as noted by the FTC, most credit card issuers also provide cardholders with $0 fraud liability, which means cardholders are completely off the hook if there is fraud on their account. As such, it’s smart to use a credit card for every purchase you make.

Extend your warranties

If you’re planning to make a large purchase for your home, like I did when I updated my appliances, using the right credit card will allow you to get an even longer warranty. That’s because some credit card issuers, like American Express (a NextAdvisor advertiser), offer extended warranties, which will extend the terms of the original manufacturer’s warranty on warranties of 5 years or less. This means you can get extra protection is the unexpected happens and your new appliance or other big purchase breaks.

Starting a home improvement project is an exciting endeavor, but if you’re not using the right form of payment, you could end up missing out on some major rewards and benefits. Sepultura Guitarist Featured In Commercial For Brazilian Home Improvement Chain

SEPULTURA Guitarist Featured In Commercial For Brazilian Home Improvement Chain

In April 2018, SEPULTURA guitarist Andreas Kisser was invited to play a part in a series of TV ads for the Brazilian home improvement chain Dicico.

Behind-the-scenes footage from the making of the commercial, filmed over two days in a location near São Paulo, can be seen below.

The company, which operates under the formal name Construdecor SA, runs home improvement stores in the state of São Paulo under the brand Dicico.

SEPULTURA‘s latest album, “Machine Messiah”, was released in January 2017 via Nuclear Blast. The disc was recorded at Fascination Street Studios in Örebro, Sweden with Swedish producer Jens Bogren. The CD’s cover artwork was created by Filipino artist Camille Della Rosa.

Story continues after advertisement

SEPULTURA will hit the road in Europe again this August, playing a mix of festivals and club shows.

SEPULTURA‘s official documentary, “Sepultura Endurance”, will tentatively be released on DVD and Blu-ray this fall. The film, which received its world premiere in May 2017 at the Regent theater in Los Angeles, shows the journey from SEPULTURA‘s humble rural beginnings to decades spent on the international stage, giving an in-depth look into how the band continues to thrive in a changing metal landscape. Crammed full of rare archival footage, and featuring interviews with legends like Lars Ulrich (METALLICA) and Scott Ian (ANTHRAX), and younger artists influenced by SEPULTURA, like SLIPKNOT‘s Corey Taylor, “Sepultura Endurance” is the definitive document of the band’s myths, struggles and heart.

Modernize and ActiveProspect Partner to Offer Certified Home Improvement Leads

Modernize and ActiveProspect Partner to Offer Certified Home Improvement Leads

08 May 2018

Modernize, Inc. (“Modernize”), the national leader in home improvement lead generation, and ActiveProspect, a SaaS provider of lead acquisition solutions, announced their partnership to offer the Modernize contractor network independently certified web leads using ActiveProspect’s  product. The collaboration is the first of its kind in the home improvement space.

TrustedForm protects companies from costly TCPA compliance violations by providing the highest standard of independent proof of consent available.  The solution meets a growing need in an environment where companies are increasingly required to document proof of prior express written consent to contact consumers. By implementing TrustedForm, Modernize is providing another layer of quality control for the leads they provide to contractors while extending additional privacy and security measures to homeowners using the platform.

“This partnership is a win-win for everyone who uses our site. Our network of contractors now has a guarantee that the lead they are receiving from us is legitimate and consensual.  Likewise, homeowners can rest assured that they won’t be receiving any solicitations or unwanted correspondence from our network,” said Jason Polka, Modernize CEO. “We are pleased to offer the TrustedForm product to our users as a continuation of our commitment to be an innovative leader in the home improvement lead generation industry.”

ActiveProspect created the lead certification category with the introduction of TrustedForm in 2010. TrustedForm issues a unique certificate that is stored with the lead record, and includes a video replay of what the consumer sees and how they interact with the web page when they submit a contact form.

“We are thrilled to partner with Modernize as they continue to demonstrate leadership in the home improvement industry by providing TrustedForm Certified leads to their customers,” said Steve Rafferty, Founder and CEO of ActiveProspect.

, an early beneficiary of the collaboration, states, “We’ve been using Modernize for four years to grow our business. With the addition of ActiveProspect and TrustedForm, we’re able to more accurately identify viable leads enabling us to spend less time chasing dead-ends and more time converting the leads we receive from Modernize into paid jobs.”

Founded in 2006, Modernize is changing the way homeowners meet and partner with home improvement contractors, helping them compare quotes and source the best contracting service for residential projects.

Tool Libraries And Home Improvement In The 21st Century

Many people love to read but simply to not have the extra cash to make the purchase of books on a regular basis. As a result, these people routinely turn to the local library to check out and read books of interest to them.
In a similar vein, in recent years many communities around the world have established so-called tool libraries. In short and in summary, a tool library actually operates on a principle similar to a book library. In its simplest form, a person who signs up to be a part of a tool library is able to check out a particular tool item for his or her home improvement project.
As a general rule, these tool libraries maintain a decent inventory of different types of tool items. These libraries tend to carry in their collection everything from the simplest tools to some of the more costly tool items that are needed for home improvement projects.
In many instances, these tool libraries have been opened in neighborhoods which tend to have families in lower income levels. Because these people do not have unlimited budgets, these lending libraries that offer tools to people interested in home improvement have become very important.
Many communities have also developed public – private partnerships that bring together governmental agencies involved in community improvement and housing issues with the private sector. As a result, tool libraries are established that provide significant service and assistance to lower income families who want to improve their living conditions on a tight budget.
Information on tool libraries can be found at a number of different websites on the Internet and World Wide Web. In addition, in the brick and mortar world, housing agencies in different communities maintain information on the availability of tool library services in a given city or town.
In summary, if you are interested in the possibility of taking on a home improvement project, you might want to see what is available in your local area in the way of a tool library. By doing so, you will be able to save money on your home improvement project. Indeed, depending on what financial resources you have available, a tool library may be precisely what you need in order to get your home improvement project up and going in the first instance. With a tool library, you can be well on down the road.
