Schooners open during kitchen renovation

BLOOMINGTON — The Schooners’ kitchen is getting a new look, but the bar is open and cold sandwiches, soups and chili are available, said owner Bob Groetken.

“The kitchen is getting old and needs a facelift,” Groetken said. “We are putting in some new equipment, some new flooring, and we need to make it more efficient.”

The project is expected to cost about $150,000. The restaurant at 810 E. Grove St. opened in 1986.

Work started Monday and should be finished in about a week, Groetken said. A new exhaust system will be installed, and three fryers and an oven/grill top will be added.

“We waited until after the Super Bowl to start it, and February is always a good time to do some work like this,” he said. “As long as we don’t get any major snow storms before then, we should be able to get it done by early next week.”

Customers shouldn’t be affected by the renovation work, although the kitchen menu will be extremely limited.

Schooners is open 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday.

Mickey Jones Dies; Home Improvement Actor Was 76

Mickey Jones, the beloved character actor who amassed more than 100 credits over the course of his career has passed away at the age of 76.

A statement from Jones’ family indicates that he had been battling an illness that resulted in several hospitalizations in recent months.

The statement did not offer any specifics regarding the nature of the illness.

While Jones’ name may not be familiar, if you’re a film and television fan, you’re almost certainly familiar with his face.

He belongs to the class of character actors so instantly recognizable that they’re known to elicit shouts of “that guy!” from audiences.

Jones’ imposing size, signature beard, and tremendous versatility made him an intimidating presence in crime dramas and an unexpected source of laughs in lighthearted comedies.

While it might be his role as Tim Allen’s rugged, yet unexpectedly sensitive friend Pete Bilker on Home Improvement for which Jones is best remembered, the gentle giant left his mark on countless esteemed projects over the years.

In addition to his work on such iconic television shows as MASH, Entourage, and Bones, Jones turned in memorable performances in such films as Total Recall, Sling Blade, and Tin Cup.

Prior to his acting career, Jones made a name for himself as a drummer for various high-profile rock and roll acts.

Before making the switch to Hollywood, he backed such legends as Kenny Rogers and Bob Dylan.

In 2009, Jones published a memoir entitled That Would Be Me.

The title was taken from his Home Improvement character’s signature catchphrase.

Thousands of tributes to Jones have been pouring in on social media since his death was announced Wednesday afternoon.

It’s a testament to the length and diversity of his career that he’s being remembered by film and television fans from various generations, and for projects as varied as Baywatch and It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia. 

Mickey Jones is survived by his wife, Phyllis Jean Starr, and their two children.

LOS ANGELES — Mickey Jones, a veteran character actor who played Rodney “Hot Rod” Dunham on “Justified” and construction worker Pete on the 1990s sitcom “Home Improvement,” has died. He was 76.

Jones died early Wednesday morning of the effects of a long illness, said his publicist, Cherry Hepburn. The illness and where he died were not immediately disclosed.

A native of Houston, Texas, Jones worked steadily in TV from the 1970s, with appearances on shows including “Baywatch” and “T.J. Hooker” and, more recently, “Growing Up Fisher” with J.K. Simmons and “Newsreaders” with Kumail Nanjiani.

On the big screen, Jones was seen in “Sling Blade,” ”Tin Cup” and “Starman.”

His “Home Improvement” role harkened back to his roots in entertainment: Pete was part of a company band, using an ad hoc drum set made up of empty plastic fuel cans and with screwdrivers as sticks.

Jones, however, was a real-deal musician. In the 1960s and ’70s, he was a drummer with Trini Lopez, Bob Dylan, Johnny Rivers and The First Edition with Kenny Rogers.

Jones’ 2007 autobiography, “That Would Be Me: Rock & Roll Survivor To Hollywood Actor,” drew the first part of its title from the catchphrase his character was known for on Tim Allen’s “Home Improvement.”

‘Justified,’ ‘Home Improvement’ actor Mickey Jones dead at 76

Mickey Jones, a prolific character actor who appeared in movies such as “National Lampoon’s Vacation” and on TV shows like “Justified” and “Home Improvement,” has died. He was 76.

“Mickey Jones died at 2:17 AM today of the effects of a long illness,” his publicist Cherry Hepburn confirmed to the Daily News.

The Houston native initially made his mark on the business as a musician, drumming for acts like Bob Dylan and The First Edition, which featured lead singer Kenny Rogers. Jones joined Dylan on his 1966 European tour, during which the singer was famously heckled by the crowd in Manchester.

He also notched credits as a percussionist on hits for The Band, Johnny Rivers and Trini Lopez, according to AllMusic.

He shifted his focus to the screen in the mid-’70s after The First Edition split, and quickly established himself as a prolific character actor with more than 130 credits to his name.

Jones had notable appearances on shows like “The Dukes of Hazzard,” “CHiPs,” “M*A*S*H” and “Step by Step.”

He also scored roles on the silver screen, like the scheming mechanic in “National Lampoon’s Vacation” and as a drummer in “Sling Blade.”

Jones never fully committed to film, though, and continued in the TV world with a recurring role on “Home Improvement” as Pete Bilker in the ’90s, and a brief stint on the FX drama “Justified” as a marijuana distributor.

His final role was as Kelson Habson in a 2015 episode of the Adult Swim sitcom “Newsreaders,” according to IMDB.
